When filming is not enough

Some products cannot be filmed usefully. The mechanism is inside the housing, the assembly is too small, the cutaway does not exist, or the product is still in CAD and has not been manufactured yet.
Modelled in 3D, the camera goes anywhere. Through the casing, inside the assembly, around a part that has never physically existed. Exploded views, cutaways, material changes and function shown rather than described.

From CAD to finished frame

If the geometry exists, it is the fastest route: the model is prepared, cleaned of manufacturing detail that adds nothing on screen, then given materials that behave like the real ones. Brushed metal has to catch light the way brushed metal does, and moulded plastic has to look moulded rather than painted.
Then it is lit, and lighting is where most product animation fails. A CAD viewport lights everything evenly so an engineer can see it. A commercial lights selectively so a viewer wants it. That single difference is what separates animation that looks like software from animation that looks like footage, and it is the studio's other job.

Where it earns its place

Products whose mechanism is sealed inside a housing. Assemblies too small to film usefully. Anything requiring a cutaway that does not physically exist. Products still in CAD that have to be sold, funded or pre-ordered before manufacture.
It also solves the practical problem of a product that is not photogenic in reality: unfinished samples, hand-built prototypes, or a unit that exists in one colour when the range has eight. Animation cut against live action is common and both are produced here.

Materials, light and why it looks real

Realism in product animation comes from materials and light rather than polygon count. A surface convinces because of how it handles reflection: brushed metal streaks along the grain, moulded plastic scatters slightly below the surface, glass bends what is behind it.
Getting those right is largely a photographic judgement rather than a technical one, which is why a studio that lights real products for a living produces different results from one that only works in software.
The lighting is then built the way a physical product shoot is built: a key that describes the form, edges that separate the object from the background, and controlled reflection that reads as expensive.
